What is psychological therapy?
There are different approaches to psychological therapy which aim to help people overcome psychological problems such as emotional, behavioural and interpersonal difficulties. At the Centre for Psychological Services we are informed by current research which suggests that the most effective approach to common psychological problems includes Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). CBT tends to be short to medium term and very effective in achieving desired goals. CBT focuses mostly on the way people think, including their attitudes and beliefs, and on the way they do things. CBT helps people identify their unhelpful thoughts and actions and how to replace them with more helpful thoughts and behaviours. CBT has been proven to be the most effective intervention for problems such as depression, anxiety, trauma, panic, sleep difficulties, relationship difficulties and coping with chronic illness. CBT is “evidence based practice” which means that it is supported by research as having a significant impact on alleviating distress.
What happens in a psychological consultation?
The initial consultations aims to gather all the necessary information required to help you achieve your goals. The psychologist aims to understand your current concerns and difficulties, as well as gain some background information about your life in order to achieve the most effective treatment plan. Initial sessions range from 1 to 1.5 hours. Subsequent sessions will usually be 1 hour in duration.
How long does it take?
The number of sessions required for each person will vary and this will be discussed with you after the first consultation. Depending on your needs and your goals, the typical number of sessions varies between 4 to 16 sessions. For example, a simple issue may take only a few sessions whereas more complex issues may take longer. In the initial sessions we will develop a treatment plan with you, and this will be reviewed at regular intervals to ensure that you are progressing in the desired way.
What about confidentiality?
All information discussed in all sessions is kept confidential and treated with privacy and respect. Without your prior consent, your information would not be disclosed with any third party, including partners and family members. The only time a psychologist is required to disclose information about you is if it is demanded by law or if we have reason to believe that you, or someone else, may be at risk of harm. Wherever possible we would discuss any concerns of this nature with you before disclosing to another party.
